Right Mouse Click the Window Icon bottom Left
Left Click Command Prompt (admin) to run as an administrator

Takes some time with percentage showing.

The only software that would access the drive and give a diagnosis was Mini Tools Partition Wizard.
This reported it as a bad disk and partition recovery did not recover it.

Deleted Files still show in Windows 7 Explorer...a Fix

If you delete a file with the delete key on the keyboard and they still show in the folder in Windows Explorer. When you press delete again it says file not found.
Try arranging the file names alphabetically.

One of the most successful solutions to this problems (although it doesn't help all the time) is to turn on the Windows desktop refresh feature. To do this, go to the Registry
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BDEADE7F-C265-11D0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}\Instance", look out for a DWORD value called "DontRefresh" which is set to "1" (on). Change the value to "0" (off). This re-enables the refresh. Note that the CLSID given above may depend on your machine. The easiest solution if you can't find the key is to just go to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID", hit "F3" and do a search for "DontRefresh

Test Memory Modules (RAM Chips) in Windows

Windows has a built in Memory Diagnostics  Tool
Type RUN
Type mdsched

Computer will reboot and run in DOS two passes and then reboot into Windows and produce a report.

Also a Free utility memtest 86 does a more comprehensive test but needs a bootable CD creating.

NAS Drives not showing in Explorer in Windows 10

For some reason the NAS Drives on my Network are not showing in Windows 10 Version 1511.
It is possible to enable them by going to Explorer-This PC-and entering \\nameofNAS.

 

 

 

Unfortunately on closing Explorer and reopening they disappear again.

These are not malware and are showing because you have set Windows 10 to show "hidden & system" files.
Do not delete them as they will be just created again.
If you don't want to see them then uncheck the box in  "hidden items "in  Windows Explorer.

If you are using more than one receiver in the same location you can change the remote control frequency so that the remote control commands do not conflict.
(This is only relevant to the Foxsat HD, HDR, HDCI 5000, HDR 1000/1010/1100S, HB1000S, FVP-4000T, HD/HDR Fox T2 freeview HD products, incl the HDR 1800/2000T)
1. Switch on your TV set and the Humax product that you wish to change the remote code.
2. Make sure that the other Humax product that you do not wish to control is in Standby or powered OFF at the mains.
3. Point the remote control towards the remote control sensor of the target receiver.
4. Press and hold the 0 and OK buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds until the PVR button on the remote stays red.
5. A message will appear on the TV screen:
"You can change the remote control mode.
Press a Numeric Key (<1> ~ <6>) to select the mode
Current mode: Mode 1."
6. Press a NUMERIC button (from 1 to 6) to select a different mode.
7. A message confirming the change of Mode will appear on screen.

 Microsoft Money Requires Internet Explorer 6 to Function Properly.



The problem cannot be resolved by reinstalling Microsoft Money, nor by running Microsoft Money in compatibility mode.

To resolve the error, try the following registry hack:
1.Open Registry Editor (RegEdit).
2.Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
3.In the right pane, look for Version registry value.
4.Modify the value date to 9.11.10240.0.  (was 9.11.10240.16384)

 I did the same, but then noticed that I needed to go to each folder as written, local machine, software, wow6432node, Microsoft & finally Internet Explorer. Mine now works

The Regedit is not as described on HP PC Windows 10 Pro 32BIT under WOW6432Node but was on NUC Windows 10 64 Bit.

Try Disconnecting the Ethernet Cable and positioning in a different Router or Switch Port.
This may release the IP Config and Renew.
Two Connections may have been assigned the same ipconfig if dual boot options exist on the same PC by the DHCP Server.

1. Log on to the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer with the administrator account.
   
2. From the Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
   
3. On the desktop window, press Windows + R keys simultaneously on the keyboard in order to open the Run command box.
   
   
4. In the available field in the Run command box, type NCPA.CPL command and press Enter.
   
5. On the opened Network Connections window, right-click the icon of the network interface card that is connected to the network and is facing issues.
   
6. From the context menu that appears, click Disable.
   
7. Wait till the NIC gets disabled, and once it does, right-click the icon again, and click Enable this time.
   
   
8. Wait till it successfully receives an IP address from the DHCP server.
   
9. If the issue persists, press Windows + X keys simultaneously on the keyboard. (Windows 8.1)

10. From the displayed menu, click Command Prompt (Admin).

Note: In Windows 8, go to the Charms bar > Search, type CMD in the field, right-click the Command Prompt from the list, and then click Run as administrator from the context menu.
11. On the displayed User Account Control confirmation box, click Yes to provide your consent to continue.
12. On the opened Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the IPCONFIG /RELEASE command and press Enter.

13. Once the command is executed successfully, and the cursor starts blinking, type the IPCONFIG /RENEW command and hit Enter.

14. If the problem still persists, check if the LAN cables are properly connected and they are not broken from anywhere (in case of wired network).
15. If everything is working fine at your end, you can check the DHCP server in case it is available within the local area network, or you can try contacting your ISP if the DHCP server is present at its end.

How to Release and Renew an IP Address

If you’re working in IT, there are a few things that you need to know no matter what. They are basically essential skills for any IT person. One of those skills is knowing how to renew and release IP addresses.
You’ll need to do this a lot during your IT career and it’s really useful for getting your computer reconnected to the Internet or to the local LAN network. Renewing an IP address can also help fix an IP address conflict.
In order to renew an IP address, go to Start, then Run and type in CMD to open a new command prompt window.
Now type in the following command:

ipconfig /renew

Whichever network adapters are currently connected on the computer will go out and have their addresses renewed with the DHCP server. If you are unable to renew an IP address, you can read my previous post on how to fix the Cannot renew IP address error.
To release an IP address, type in the following command:

ipconfig /release

This command will release the IP address for all connected adapters. Note that you can also refresh all DHCP leases and re-register DNS names using the registerdns command.

ipconfig /registerdns

1. Click File, and then Save As
2. In the File name box, change the file name to ReserveWin10.cmd
3. Then click the dropdown next to Save as type, and select All files (*.*)
4. Select the folder you would like to save the file to.  For this example, let’s choose to save the file to the C:/Temp folder.  Then click Save. 
5. Open an elevated command prompt.  (From the Start screen or Start menu, type Command Prompt in the search box, and then in the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.)

The Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser can take 10 – 30 minutes to run, during which the script will continuously provide status reports that it is running.  Please be patient.
If the script is failing in an infinite loop, then you don’t have the necessary prerequisite Windows Updates.  Besides requiring Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update, you must also have installed:

You can manually check if you have these updates within your elevated command prompt by typing the command:
dism /online /get-packages | findstr 3035583    
(Replace the KB number with whichever update you are looking for.)  If you have the update installed, this command will show the package identity.  For example, Windows 8.1 users should see this:

Problem using Microsoft Money from a Dropbox Account

 Using Money from Dropbox

When opened from a shared directory such as Dropbox Microsoft Money creates .lrd files and renames as .tmp files.

            

In use Microsoft Money is constantly updating the file, and expects the file to be INSTANTLY available. Never try to open a file that is not on your hard drive. Any delay or caching of the data between your computer and the stored location will cause the file to become corrupt or will lose data. The fact that the server is making extra copies is an indication that Dropbox cannot keep up with the changes and is trying to make versions, in the hope that you have some way of merging the changes.
Money cannot merge data from different files. Stop accessing the file directly from a shared location. Copy the file locally, work on the file, close Money, wait for the file to be properly closed (wait for the *.lrd file to disappear - don't delete it yourself), then copy the newly edited file back up to Dropbox. This warning applies to any non-local storage, not just for Dropbox.
The Readme.htm file in Money's install directory clearly lists this, it is item #20 for Money Plus/Sunset.

PC Screen Resolution changes on Boot Up...Fix through Registry Edit.......regedit.exe

Step #1:
Open your start menu and in the search bar type in regedit and hit enter. UAC will pop-up asking if you would like to allow this program to make changes to the computer, just hit Yes.

Step #2:
In the left pane of regedit you will see a list of registry keys;
- Click the little white arrow beside HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG to expand this key.
- Expand System > CurrentControlSet > Control > VIDEO

Step #3:
Now you should see one or mroe keys with random numbers and letters, for example my video key is {F92BFB9B-59E9-4B65-8AA3-D004C26BA193}.

If you expand these keys you will see another key in each of these named 0000.

Simply click on these 0000 keys to see their values, you are looking for the one that has multiple values in it, for example Attach.RelativeX, Attach.RelativeY, etc.

The proper 0000 key should also have a child key (which is your monitor's registry settings, yay!), mine is named Mon12345678 but yours may be different.

Step #4:
Now for the registry changes, since 0000 and the Mon12345678 keys have the same settings and values, I changed both of them to be identical. I'm not entirely sure which one windows 7 uses, but it doesn't hurt to change them both just to be sure.

In order to change a registry key's values;
- right click on the Name of the value and select Modify...
- where it says Base select the Decimal option
- input the new numerical value you wish to enter in the Value data: text field

The settings to change are;
Attach.RelativeX - this is your screens X resolution, mine is set to 1360
Attach.RelativeY - this is your screens Y resolution, mine is set to 768
DefaultSettings.XResolution - this is your screens default X resolution, mine is set to 1360
DefaultSettings.YResolution - this is your screens default Y resolution, mine is set to 768

Step #5:
You are done! Simply click File>Exit and your registry settings will automatically be saved.
*Note* A system reboot may be required before these settings take effect.

Mobile Phone Signal Strength and SIM

I have read in a number of Forums that a poor signal has not got anything to do with a SIM card.

I have two identical Nokia phones and two SIM cards on identical PAYG plans.

One phone kept giving no Network Coverage the other had at least 40% signal strength.

Swapping the SIM and the fault was on the other phone.

This identifies that the phones are OK and the SIM is responsible.

Cleaning the SIM card contacts made no difference and packing with a thin card to give better contact made no difference.

Putting in a new SIM card  worked and both phones have the same signal strength which is not very good anyway where I live.

I do not understand the pedantic responses on forums saying that the SIM card is not responsible for signal strength when it clearly can be along with numerous other reasons.

First go to settings and then General then Spotlight Search

Make sure Applications is ticked

With the newest OS go to the search screen and search for - (minus sign).  Or hyphen on touchpad but most characters will work on the .?123 button

If Applications is unticked the same action above will instead show your Music  Tracks instead.

Once you have a list of your apps the folder will be named on the right hand side if you have created a folder.

Tapping on an App will open it of course.
